There really is not anything to say. Honestly, I have so many thoughts and things to say before I post these, but once the time comes. It has sort of passed. Below is a carrot cake that Tarnia baked and it is so moist and delicious, like omg. Patrick cooked for 8 hungry ladies haha Then we went to Angeli Rock and that is where I had a "grasshopper" which is basically a mint chocolate alcoholic beverage. Once again I could not finish it. The first few sips were yummy, but afterward..no. -Snoh
Hebrews 10:25 - "Not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near." Snohwhite Personal Blog Minji Noh's Music Shields of Strength Ranking:
1.5-2 Description: It is a Sicilian white wine that is made from inzolia grapes. I mean it is alright, but honestly I do not really like white wines for some reason. It tasted a bit cheap and turns out that it was according to the friend who bought it. Note: You drink white wine with fish. Would Buy Again?: No Price: She said around £2? -Snoh So apparently there is a tradition here in Italy where people eat Gnocchi on Thursdays. Kind of like Taco Tuesdays Since I had lunch at my friends' apartment (more like finishing the cheese we bought with crackers and prosciutto - also another story about that later...ermahgerd) I decided that I would make dinner that night of gnocchi and vegetables. Lord knows we need them veggies. I bought all of the ingredients Gnocchi aint cheap, especially if it is fresh pasta. Note: Fresh pasta floats as you know by now. and went over to their place that night. It is a simple recipe really of tomato sauce, basil, oregano, brown sugar, carrots, pepper, onion. But seriously though, on the note of fresh pasta - we had the Food Visualization and Representation class and we went to Eataly to tour around. As she was explaining things about pasta to us, we passed by the area where fresh pasta is made and sold. The man had just made fresh tortellini and offered some samples to us...raw. But, apparently, if it is fresh, you can eat it raw. IT WAS SO GOOD. WTF. It had like some type of cheese, pesto, or something delicious inside. Anyways, Dr. K bought us chocolate that seriously was heavenly. According to Dr. K, you do not ever chew chocolate. You just let it melt in your mouth to fully appreciate the flavor. Duh. But still she taught us a lot of cool other stuff. The 2 Most famous chocolate brands in Italy are: - Venchi - Baratti&Milano She bought us Baratti&Milano hazelnut -infused chocolates that began to melt just from the heat from our hands. We popped them into our mouths and just...mmm o.m.g. I ate 3 of those goodies. But yeah, before I begin side-tracking even more.
Time to update on this blog since I have been lazy. -Snoh Psalms 119:103 - "How sweet are thy words unto my taste! [yea, sweeter] than honey to my mouth!" Snohwhite Personal Blog Minji Noh's Music Shields of Strength Brand: Nero D'Avola Ranking:
1.5 Description: So, our professor recommended that when we buy wine, we should buy from Nero D'Avola. Nero D'Avola is a Sicilian wine. She also said that we should invest in buying better wine around £5 or more. We found all this out after drinking this wine, but it does not matter because it is usually around £2 and was on sale for less than £1 ... It is a red wine. Yea... it was not good... it was very sharp, strong, and basically kicked me in the nose. Rough and bitter. I definitely needed to eat the corn nuts with it. Would Buy Again? No. Price: On sale for <£1, usually around £2. -Snoh Brand: Villa Paladiana Ranking:
3.5 Description: Has a strong taste, but it smooth. Not as sharp as the Nero that I tried that day. Definitely sweeter than a Cabernet. It is a red wine. Would Buy Again?: Yes, although I do not buy alcohol here. Price: Around £3 -Snoh To learn... Ciao Raga!
So, I am currently abroad in Rome, Italy and I am taking a course called "Food and its visual representations. Food between sin and art: from Trimalchio's supper to Babette's feast and to contemporary slow food culture" that is only offered in the program that I am a part of. It was the first of its kind and there are other "Food" courses; however, none of them are like this one where it covers all topics and goes beyond. Course Description: "The renowned gastronome Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin wrote about food in 1825 "Tell me what you eat, and I'll tell you who you are". Food is a symbol of various cultural beliefs all imbedded in the ingredients of a recipe to its preparation, promotion and consumption. This survey course aims to explore the complex relationships among food, society and culture from different sociological, historical and economic views. We will examine the role of food from antiquity to the present by placing particular importance on how food strengthens relationships among individuals and communities to its use as a plot device, a method of revealing a villain or saint in poetry, literature and art. Students in this course will learn about the types of food associated with different cultural and ethnic groups, traditions and celebrations. trhough lectures, class discussions, field trips and visits, readings, films and individual research projects, students will ahve the opportunity not only to explore an important aspect of Rome's local culture, but also to be aware of 'cultural identities', seen through opposition to or the acquisition of different models." I hope to blog about everything that I learn and more concerning food here. This does not mean that I will be putting up photos of everything I eat, but more like things that I want to remember in the future and do not mind sharing. -Snoh More coming soon. Here is a link to the Table of Contents for a preview.
"What is it that confers the noblest delight? What is that which swells a man's breast with pride above that which any other experience can bring to him? Discovery! To know that you are walking where none others have walked; that you are beholding what human eye has not seen before; that you are breathing a virgin atmosphere. To give birth to an idea--to discover a great thought -- an intellectual nugget, right under the dust of a field that many a brain--plow had gone over before. To find a new planet, to invent a new hinge, to find the way to make the lightnings carry your messages. To be the first--that is the idea. To do something, say something, see something, before any body else--these are the things that confer a pleasure compared with which other pleasures are tame and commonplace, other ecstasies cheap and trivial. ... What is there in Rome for me to see that others have not seen before me? What is there for me to touch that others have not touched? What is there for me to feel, to learn, to hear, to know, that shall thrill me before it pass to others? What can I discover? --Nothing. Nothing whatsoever. One charm of travel dies here. But if I were only a Roman! --If, added to my own I could be gifted with modern Roman sloth, modern Roman superstition, and modern Romanboundlessness of ignorance, what bewildering worlds of unsuspected wonders I would discover! Ah, if I were only a habitant of the Campagna five and twenty miles from Rome! Then I would travel." An excerpt from The Innocents Abroad by Mark Twain
Formatted by Sarah Noh Classes have officially begun. They began yesterday (15th). I mean, yes we had Italian (intensive Italian) and our core class (Home in Rome), but now all of our other classes have begun and I love them all so far! ... Still, they do sap a lot of energy out of me because our Intensive Italian is still going on.
I am definitely beginning to lose my sense of time and date now and everything is becoming a blur. I guess that I will not be doing the whole "Day __" anymore blogs, but ones about the trips that I will be taking and just places around Rome that I observe, etc. ... I want to blog about all of the things I see and feel still...who knows if that will happen. For some of our courses, we already have to write observations etc in our moleskin notebooks. Why the eff are we required to get moleskin. P.S. Today, Shelby made dinner for us and it was delicious! P.S.S. But all of that cheese, pasta, bread, milk, etc is catching up to me because I feel so bloated and uncomfortable right now. Maybe I am lactose-intolerant after all...? -Snoh Basically, I went to the Mercato Contadino (kind of like a Farmers' Market that happens every weekend) today with Lorenza, Camila, Nick, Mike, Drew, Gabriel ... At the caffè over there, the guy that was working (super cute. first cute Italian guy. I must admit) gave me his number.... ... So how did that happen? Basically, his uncle who is the owner of the caffè knows Lorenza's sister and they were chatting and I was there and then he said to me in Italian: You need to learn how to speak Italian. If you want, Gabriele can show you around. Come Gabriele. ... Gabriele, the nephew, came and gave me his number. He looked shy but dang cute! Later, Lorenza's sister told me that Gabriele is really shy and slow at these things, so his uncle was helping him out cause he could tell that he was interested in me. And then she proceeded to explain how Italians are straightforward sometimes etc. But whatever, I thought that was cool :P Afterward, we went to a non-profit restaurant where volunteers come and make food and sell the food. The money made is used to maintain the place and for the food. I had the 2nd course with bruschetta, lasagna al pesto, fritata di zucchine, patate al forno, vino. It was delicious! ... What is cool there is how you can bring your own bread to bake in their oven. But anyways, will let the pics and video do the talking. -Snoh
